Lampung: The Javanese Province
By: Jousairi Hasbullah
Lampung province is unique. The Lampung people or ethnic group is not the largest ethnic group in its own province. Although Javanese is rank one in several provinces outside Java Island, but the domination of Javanese in Lampung is of much more signigicant.
Javanese ethnic group is the largest and most significant-dominated ethnic group in Lampung contributing 64.06 persen. This is due to the fact that Lampung was the first destination of transmigrants..in which people were moved away from the crowded island of Java.
The Lampung ethnic group were only the second largest..and the gap is very sharp. The Lampung ethnic were only 13.54 percent to the total population of Lampung province.
I give you the composition of ethnic group in Lampung province from the result of 2010 Indonesia Population Census.
1. Javanese 4.856 805 or 64.06 %
2. Lampung 1 026 693 or 13.54 %
3. Sundanese 728 715 or 9.61%
4.Bantenese 172 371 or 2.27%
5. Malay 161 030 or 2.12%
6. Palembang 144 513 or 1.91%
7.Ogan 106 669 or 1.41%
8.Balinese 104 606 or 1.38%
9.Minangkabau 69652 or 0.92%
10. Batak 52 311 or 0.69%
11.Other 158 584 or 2.09%
Total 7.581.948 or 100.0%
By adding Sundanese and Bantenese ( originally from island of Java) to the Javanese..the ethnic group originated from the island of Java residing in Lampung consists of more than three quarters of the total population of Lampung. If we add all ethnics other than Lampung ethnic, this is very interesting one. 86 persen of Lampung people are not Lampung ethnic.
